In the New York Times article "Judge Finds California Boy Responsible in the Killing of His Neo Nazi Father" by Ian Lovett 12 year Joseph Hall was put on trail for killing his neo nazi father Jeff Hall when he was 10. The main idea of this article is the reason why. Why did Joseph kill his father? he is described as a violent boy who has been kicked out of numerous schools. He bite and scratched another student and tried to strangle a teacher with a telephone cord. The judge ruled that he was responsible for second degree murder and that he was to put into state custudy. He was the youngest person to do that.
Ian Lovett wants us to feel some pity for this boy. Lovett mentions that Joseph was beaten by his father for years before he killed him. Suffering like that for years is bound to leave some sort of mark behind. By mentioning this Joseph gets sympathy from people. Especially parents. His attorny says "Joseph is a little boy and his life has been very sad." By mentionnig this as well the Author cleverly pulls on the heartstrings of others. Lovett describes Joseph as slight blonde boy wearing glasses and a button down shirt. This description shows him as a innocent boy and makes people wonder if he can do something like this.
My persanol reaction to his was shock. Then it turned to pity. If your father beat you for years then eventually you would wanto to kill him too. The thing is Joseph actually had the guts to do it. I think if he had a nututing home than he wouldn't have done this. He would have grown up like any other boy.
