I recently finished reading Darkness Before Dawn by J.A. London. It's set in a vampire dystopian future where vampires rule the U.S. The main character Dawn Montgomery is the youngest vampire delegate after her parents were killed 3 months ago. Lord Valentine requested her. She has a blind hatred towards vampires as her brother was supposedly killed by vampires. It turns out that he was turned into a vampire but refused to drink human blood resulting him to drinking vampire blood instead. He was driven crazy by this and became infected with the thirst. A disease that turns vampires into mindless killers. However after meeting Victor Valentine's son she begins to see that not all vampires are evil. They need blood to survive.
Dawn hated Vampires with a passion. She blames them for the death of her family. However the only vampire she really knew was Lord Valentine and he shrouded himself in mystery. She says that she thought all Vampires were monsters. However humanity didn't realize until it was too late. What this is saying is that humans didn't really understand vampires at all. They also didn't realize how much vampires need blood to survive. vampires aren't monsters. They are just another species. They need human blood to survive. Dawn's opinion of vampires changed after meeting a family of vampires. She saw how the blood helped a young vampire on the brink of madness. This is an example of human ignorance. They like to think of Vampires as the monsters when in truth the true monsters are the humans themselves. Victor has a positive influence on Dawn. He helps her understand vampires better as he is one himself.
There will always be ignorance in the world. People will always assume. But they don't know. They don't take the time to learn. It's like several rather extreme Muslims do some rather extreme things others assume that all Muslims are like that. We're not all like that. In truth we're like anyone else. We have likes, dislikes, hopes, dreams and disappointments like anyone else. We just do some things differently like prayer and fasting. It's not until you actually take the time to get to know us that you realize that we're not different.
